This beautifully restored house is very interesting for me because of the special attention the architects have devoted to the conservation and the restoration of the old building that dates from the 16th century. It also impresses me with its amazing mix of old and new, the combination of stone walls with concrete floors, the warm wood and the steel details. The building is located in the medieval center of Girona, a city in northeastern Catalonia, Spain and recently has been restored by Anna Noguera’s architectural studio. It is located on the street Alemanys, hence the name – Alemanys 5.

The building had undergone a lot of changes over the years, during which most of the original interior was lost, so the renovation began with a search of the most interesting features of the old structure. The designers removed all unnecessary additions and traces of previous repairs. Their approach is in minimal intervention and a dialogue between the old and the new. The materials aren’t many – the stone and the wood, which were used for the construction of the building, the architects complemented with steel and concrete. All materials retain their natural color and surface. Local stone has a warm color that is further softened by the warm color of the oak. Oak can be seen in the attic beams and some of the furniture, and it softens the feel of the polished concrete floors and the heavy steel details (these of windows, fireplace, interior doors and furniture in one of the rooms).

The building houses two separate apartments – a duplex named “El Badiu” – The Veranda, which occupies the two upper floors, and “El Jardi” – The Garden, on the first floor overlooking the pool. There is a small shop at the ground floor and the yard developes from the hard stone of the building through the green of the grass to the soft feeling of cool water in the small pool in hot summer days.
