People doing work on their laptops in parks or on small tables in coffee shops are getting more and more now. I like the idea to be able to work taking advantage of the nice weather. On the other hand, everyone knows that working with a laptop on one’s knees, isn’t comfortable or healthy for both the person and the laptop. Even coffee shops’ tables are not suitable, because the computer is still not ventilated enough nor the position of the display is at the appropriate height for a convenient work on it. Personally, I’m using for years now a very clever and very cheap but terribly effective gadget that I bought back in 2010 in Danish Design Centre‘s shop – four silicone feet that raise the laptop enough to allow cooling to work well and at the same time allow achieving a convenient angle for the keyboard and the display so I can work comfortably on almost every table. They are so cheap now – I found them in ebay for less than $2, and at Deal Extreme they even offer free shipping (I suspect these are replicas of the product I have, but I can’t be sure, because that was all I could find, and I don’t remember the manufacture from 5 years ago). These legs are also very small and light, easy to carry, and they last long – I now have them for five years of continuous use, and their only problem is that they have lost a little colour and no longer make such a good vacuum.

However, my favourite silicon laptop feet have some drawbacks – I can not count how many times I lost, dropped and searched under tables and chairs at least one of them. Moreover, they are suitable for use only on suitable surfaces (on a table or a desk). In any case they are not comfortable if you use your computer on a park bench or on the couch at home. They are also manufactured from a non-recyclable material and are not environmentally friendly. This is why I tried to find new and better options. Here are the best models I found for laptop stands made of wood or wood-based panels.

1. Stood by Enrico Icardi

My personal favorite is made by two boards, assembled on right angle making a comfortable stand for the laptop. The best thing is that when not in use they take no more space than an ordinary notebook.

2. EASEL – Magnetic Laptop Cooling

The second stand is made of two wooden legs, attached to the base of the notebook with magnets. They are not suitable for all models (my laptop has a plastic body so the magnet won’t work with it), but they are very handy if you accidentally move your computer or simply need to change the table in the coffee shop, because the sun has moved or there’s an electrical socket next to the other table.

3. Wood laptop stand by iwoodlab

The next type of stand in my opinion will work better with thinner models but it is such a clever design that I couldn’t skip to mention it – the stand makes use of the angle between the two planes – the one of the  computer and that of the wodeen plate to make it stand in a specific position. There is also a place for pens and for the power cable. When not in use, the board is just a thin flat plate, which is very compact and have a convenient handle.

4. Puzzle laptop stand by GreenTunaDesign

My fourth choice also consists of two separate wooden legs that fold into each other like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and allow greater height than the previous models. The model has even a space for storing the keyboard and a way to store the computer when not in use.

5.LapDesk

The fifth type holders I like is a design that can be found in a lot of varieties – each of them is actually a flat tray with holes for ventilation – it’s very easy to move and to use it when holding the laptop on your knees. This position is not recommended for long periods of work, because of the serious weight of the unit and the very low position of the display, that can conduct to a curved back. Knowing all this disadvantages of the position, a lot of people (including myself) still spend a lot of time with a laptop on their knees. That’s why there are so many variations of this type of stand. Most of them have some space for a mouse, some even for a phone or a tablet, or a place for a notebook and all of them have ventilation holes. My personal favourite is the model with retractable stand for the mouse rldh (the first picture below), but I like the design of Slate stand too (on the second picture) and the model of SpiffyBrewed even has options to place usb sticks and a place for the tablet that is fastened with elastic in order not to fall when moving the tray.
